Here’s a ‘Dummy Head’ recording I made at Eastbourne Airshow this year (2022)

This is a Binaural recording and only works properly on headphones. The microphones are placed inside a dummy head so that they pick up sound in the same way as you and I do. When listened to, the audio seems to be outside the head, just like real life. Stereo recordings sound like they are between your ears but binaural expands the sound to all around your head.

Technical notes

  • The head and ears were printed separately on a 3D printer.
  • Assembled and filled with polyurethane foam.
  • The mics are electret capsules embedded in the ear canals.
  • They are phantom powered and plugged into a Zoom H4n handheld recorder.
