Seymour Duncan Humbucker Conversion

I wanted to convert my Seth Lover SH55b Bridge Pickup from a single wire to four wires to give me options for more tones. As it was, I didn't like the sound much at all - I can only describe it a 'quacky'—very one dimensional and unappealing.

Dismantling the pickup was fairly easy, the cover is held with a couple of spots of solder. I scraped and cut away as much lead as possible and then tapped a scalpel blade into the join to separate the base from the cover. Hidden under a couple of inches of tape are the ends of the wires as shown. I've colour coded them to match the published spec. I then used an old USB cable to replace the single core wire - this had exactly the right coloured wires to match stock 4-wire pickups and a screen which I soldered to the baseplate.

With access to the ends of both coils I can now switch phase, split it into single coils, or two coils wired in parallel or series. All these options sound slightly different and I can't think why you wouldn't want to have the extra wires on it. I was quite disappointed when I ordered the set and only the neck pickup had 4 wires. With the single core wire, you cannot even reverse the phase because the shield would be connected to the hot signal.

Funnily enough my neck pickup (also a Seth Lover SH55) is mis-wired - if I connect it as recommended there's barely any signal and what there is is extremely thin—clearly the coils are out of phase with each other! While the coils are on the BLACK~WHITE and RED~GREEN wires as they should be, I believe the Red and Green are reversed - a reviewer on Thomann's website reported the same issue.
